Neglect and Discrimination Against Transgender Women in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, society’s neglect and discrimination toward transgender women have deeply affected their livelihoods. Without acceptance in families, schools, or workplaces, many transgender women are forced into sex work as a means of survival. Social stigma, legal complications, and barriers to accessing healthcare make their lives even more difficult.

The mainstream’s reluctance to give them space and the persistent attitude of disdain only amplify the inequality they face. The prevailing social and cultural norms in Bangladesh repeatedly deny their true gender identity, leaving them isolated from both family and society.

Our demand is simple yet urgent: If transgender women are given opportunities for employment, safety, and dignity, they will no longer be pushed into sex work. Society must take responsibility for creating that space—where every woman, regardless of gender identity, can live with respect.
